Scranton’s motto is: “Embracing Our People, Our Traditions and Our Future”. The city’s nickname “Electric City” began when electric lights were introduced in 1880 at the Dickson Manufacturing Company.

Scranton, “The All America City”, was incorporated on February 14, 1856, as a borough in Luzerne County and as a city on April 23, 1866. Scranton is called “Steamtown” and “The Coal Capital”.
By a 6 to 1 local approval vote, Lackawanna County gained independent status in 1878 with Scranton as the County Seat. Scranton has renovated many older building to attract new businesses and has many coffee shops, restaurants in the downtown area, creating a vibrant night-life.
